The top 3 causes of truck accidents

Semi-truck, big-rig and other large commercial vehicle accidents wreak havoc with traffic flow for motorists every day, but even more concerning is the potential danger and risk of personal injury these accidents present.

So, why do trucks pose such a risk? The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) performed a study to determine the leading causes of truck accidents. The study identified the top three causes of truck accidents:

1. Driver-related causes:

Issues involving truck drivers themselves pose the highest risk of accident. For example, driver illness, fatigue, inattention and failure to obey traffic laws - such as speeding, following too close and making illegal maneuvers - were among the leading causes of truck accidents.

2. Vehicle-related issues:

Cargo shifting due to improper loading, brake problems and tire problems were also identified as causes of truck accidents.

3. Environmental issues:

Roadway problems were also identified as contributing to truck accident, though to a lesser extent.

While a great deal of attention and effort has been put forth in recent years to ensure the vehicles are in good service, the reality is that the leading cause of semi-truck crashes is still the person behind the wheel - the driver. While federal and state laws hold truck drivers to exacting standards, they are still humans who make errors in judgment.
